This year we've decided to separate out the Oakwood and Westwood groups and make sure that they each have their own dedicated coaching staff. This will allow us to bring on more coaches overall, spread out the seasons, and give us more flexibility overall.
We are VERY excited about these changes, but could always use more help!
If you're interested in a Coach or Volunteer position this 2024-25 season, check out our interest form at: https://forms.office.com/r/f26gysqF3K
In order to allow for the higher sign ups that we've had the past 2 years, we've decided to separate Oakwood and Westwood, and make sure the programs are the right length and have the right focus, based on the age of the participants. Check out our new groups below!
Prospects will be our first or second year wrestlers. This group is suggested for our DK-K wrestlers, but young 1st graders may also find that this group suits them. The focus of this group is an introduction to wrestling. Basic technique, time on the mat, and social aspects of the sport.
Our goal will be to have a small tournament event for this group at the end of their season to work towards.
Practice Times: Mondays and Wednesday 5:30-6:15
Season Length: 4 weeks (Nov 4 - Nov 27)
Fee: $50
The focus of this group will be a more in depth introduction to wrestling. Basic technique, more focus on takedowns, increasing their time on the mat, and an introduction to some scoring and rules. 1st and 2nd grade Rookies will not need to have prior experience in wrestling. It is recommended that Kindergartners participate for one season at the Prospects level, before joining the Rookies.
Our for this group will be to participate in one or two takedown tournaments.
Practice Times: Mondays and Wednesday 6:30-7:30
Season Length: 8 weeks (Nov 4 - Dec 30)
Fee: $75
The focus of this group is to take a more structured approach to the sport, and introduce some competitive events. This group will not participate in MYWAY events, but will have the opportunity to compete at home events hosted by our Club. We will cover age appropriate technique, prepare for competing (scoring & rules), get time on the mat, and discuss some mental/mindset aspects of the sport. Participants may stay at the Contender level for all 3 years if they choose.
Our goal for this group will be participation in one or two takedown tournaments and Jamboree-style events.
Practice Times: Tuesdays/Thursdays (time TBD)
Season Length: 12 weeks (Dec 3 - Feb 27)
Fee: $125
This group will be the more competitive of the two Westwood-aged groups. Before enrolling a wrestler in the Veteran group a wrestler should have at least 1 year at a Contender level, or 1 year participating in competitive events. We will cover age-appropriate technique, prepare for competing, spend time on the mat, and cover mental/mindset aspects of the sport. This group will practice for most of the season with the Contender group, but will have the addition of more intense/involved workouts to prepare for competitive events. These workouts will be achieved through split sessions during the week, and/or Saturdays depending on coach availability.
Their competitive events will include MYWAY tournaments, home hosted events, and post-season workouts with the middle school athletes preparing for MYWAY post-season tournaments.
Practice Times: Tuesdays and Thursdays (time TBD)
Season Length: 16 weeks (Dec 3 - Mar 27)
Fee: $150
Before participating in club practices, activities, or camps all wrestlers must have the Concussion Forms and Insurance Waiver Forms completed and on file. Those files can be found below.
Print and sign these forms and bring them with you to your first day of camp or email them to portlandwrestlingclub@gmail.com.
Our club is part of the Michigan Youth Wrestling Association MYWAY, and supports our 3rd-5th grade wrestlers at MYWAY events.
Wrestlers participating in any MYWAY events or tournaments, must have a Sports Engine account and be registered through the club.
Please see a coach or board member for more information.
